Stop chasing trends and focus on problem solving

In the fast-paced world of design, it’s easy to get swept up in the latest trends. You see the flashy graphics, the vibrant colors, and the sleek interfaces, and you think, “That’s what I need to do to attract clients.”

But here’s the truth:

Chasing design trends won’t get you clients. Solving real problems will

When I started my journey as a designer, I often found myself following trends, thinking they were the key to success. I would spend hours perfecting the latest styles, only to realize that my clients weren’t interested in my trend-following skills, they wanted solutions to their challenges.

If you’re feeling stuck in the trend trap, here’s what to focus on instead.

Solve real problems for real people

Every project begins with a need. Your goal as a designer is to understand that need and create a solution. Whether it’s improving user experience or addressing a specific pain point, your designs should aim to make a difference.

Let’s say you’re designing a website for a small local bakery. Instead of just making it look pretty, think about the problems they face:

– How can you make online ordering easier for customers?
– What features will help them manage inventory better?

Focusing on these issues will not only make your design stand out but will also build trust with your clients.

Start each project by conducting a needs assessment. Talk to your clients about their pain points and what they hope to achieve.

This will set a strong foundation for your design work.

Ask “Why?” before designing anything

Before you put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, pause and ask yourself:

Why am I designing this?

Understanding the purpose behind your design will help you stay focused on delivering value rather than just following aesthetic trends.

Imagine you’re creating a landing page for a new product. Instead of just making it visually appealing, ask:

– Why the product exists.
– What problem does it solve?
– How does it improve the lives of its users?

This deeper understanding will guide your design choices and ensure your work resonates with the target audience.

Create a list of “Why” questions for each project. Answering these questions can lead to more meaningful and effective designs.

Create designs that actually work

Your designs should not only look good but also function effectively. A beautiful layout is useless if users can’t navigate it or achieve their goals.

When I worked on a project for a mobile app, I realized that a minimalistic design was appealing but didn’t facilitate easy navigation. By incorporating user feedback and testing, we made adjustments that significantly improved usability. The app went from being visually appealing to truly functional.

Conduct usability testing throughout your design process. Gather feedback from actual users to ensure your designs meet their needs.

Deliver results, not just flashy visuals

Clients are looking for outcomes. They want to see how your designs will impact their business, whether through increased sales, improved user engagement, or enhanced brand recognition.

Always track the performance of your designs. Use analytics tools to measure success and present these results to your clients.

The future of design isn’t about trends

As we move forward in the design world, it’s becoming clearer that the future isn’t about which trends are hot. It’s about creating solutions that truly work.

Many designers struggle with the balance between aesthetic appeal and functionality. The pressure to create visually stunning work can overshadow the primary goal of solving problems. Remember, trends will always change, but the need for effective solutions will remain constant.

I believe the design industry is at a crossroads. As technology evolves, so do the expectations of clients and users. The future lies in adaptive design – creating flexible solutions that can evolve alongside changing user needs.
