Remember the days of slicing PSDs like a pro? If you’re nodding your head, you’re probably feeling a mix of nostalgia and relief right now. It feels like ages ago, doesn’t it? But also somehow just yesterday.
When I started my web design journey back in 2004, Photoshop was the go-to tool.

We’d spend hours finalizing our designs, layer by layer, only to end up with countless versions of “final_final_FINAL_v5.psd”. Sound familiar?
I can almost hear the collective sigh from designers everywhere.
But oh, how far we’ve come!
Over the years, I’ve transitioned from Photoshop to Sketch, then to Adobe XD, and now I’m all about Figma.

Each switch brought its own set of challenges, but also made work easier, faster, and more collaborative. No more nightmares about version control or lost files.
As the legendary designer Massimo Vignelli once said:
If you can design one thing, you can design everything.
This rings especially true when we consider how adaptable we’ve had to be with changing tools and technologies.
But here’s the real kicker – the most important lesson I’ve learned through all these transitions:
It’s not about the tools. It never was.
It’s about solving problems. That’s where the real magic happens.
Don’t get me wrong – I love playing with new tools as much as the next designer. There’s something delight about exploring new features and figuring out how they can streamline our workflow. But at the end of the day, we need to remember why we do this in the first place.
So, my fellow designers, I encourage you to try new tools. Have fun with them! Experiment, explore, and see how they can enhance your creative process. But never lose sight of the problems you’re trying to solve. That’s where your true value lies.
What’s your favorite design tool memory?
Do you miss the satisfaction of perfectly slicing a PSD, or are you thrilled to have left those days behind?
